GOVERNORS ISLAND ’10

TRANSPARENT FOREST –
SUSTAINABLE SUMMER PAVILION FOR GOVERNORS ISLAND – MAY 2010

THE PROPOSED 2300 SF PAVILION IS A DIRECT REACTION TO SITE, PROGRAM AND PREMISE. THE TRANSPARENT FOREST STANDS IN COMPLETE CONTRAST TO THE SOLID, HEAVY AND CONSERVATIVE SURROUNDINGS OF LIGGET HALL, MAKING ITS MODEST DIMENSIONS POWERFUL AND COMPELLING.

ITS BASIC STRUCTURE IS MADE OF RECYCLED 2″ x 4″, 2″ x 6″ AND PLYWOOD BOARDS, THE BASIC AMERICAN CONSTRUCTION BUILDING BLOCK, AND DESIGNED IN A WAY THAT WILL ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR FOUNDATIONS. LARGE DISCS, SPREAD OUT AND INTEGRATED WITH EACH OTHER WILL ANCHOR THE “FOREST” TO THE GROUND.

TRANSPARENT, LIGHTWEIGHT “TREES” MADE OF THE VERY HIGH-TECH MATERIAL – ETFE – ARE SUPPORTED FROM THE MAIN STRUCTURE, FORMING THE SPACE OF THE PAVILION AND WILL SHELTER ITS FUTURE PROGRAM. ETFE IS TRANSPARENT “FABRIC” THAT ALLOWS LIGHT TO PENETRATE THROUGH BUT PREVENTS HEAT FROM DOING THE SAME. IT IS 1/300 THE WEIGHT OF GLASS, CAN SUSTAIN HARSH WEATHER AND IS 100% RECYCLABLE. IT IS SELECTED FOR ITS ECO FRIENDLY PHILOSOPHY, COST EFFICIENCY, EASE OF CONSTRUCTION AND SHIPPING.

THE PAVILION HAS NO ASSIGNED OFFICIAL ENTRY AND IS OPEN FOR VISITORS TO ENTER AND EXIT FROM ALL DIRECTIONS.

A COFFEE SHOP IS ADDED TO THE PROGRAM AND IS INTEGRATED WITH THE PAVILION, USING THE SAME FORM, MATERIALITY AND STRUCTURAL CONCEPT.

VISITORS IN BOTH PAVILION AND COFFEE SHOP HAVE A DIRECT VIEWING LINE TO THE “STAGE”, A GRASS SQUARES PERFORMANCE AREA.
