TEL AVIV PENTHOUSE ADDITION ’98

THE SMALL STRUCTURE, TAKING OVER AN OPEN TERRACE OF A PENTHOUSE LOCATED ON TOP OF ONE OF THE HIGHEST TOPOGRAPHICAL POINTS OF TEL AVIV, IS ENJOYING REMARKABLE URBAN VIEWS. WITH ITS MAIN FAÇADE LOOKING EAST AND ITS ENTRY FACING SOUTH, DIRECTLY INTO THE SUN, THIS SMALL ADDITION FACES A CONFLICT OF GOALS, DUE TO THE GIVEN ORIENTATION:
HOW TO MAINTAIN THE SPECTACULAR VIEWS WHILE PROTECTING THE SPACE FROM THE SCORCHING MEDITERRANEAN SUN LIGHT, AND PROVIDING READING LIGHT EVEN AND BRIGHT ENOUGH FOR A SPACE DEDICATED FOR STUDY.

THE ANSWER TO THE CONFLICTING REQUESTS IS IN A FORM OF MULTI-LAYERED DEGREE OF SHADES, SUPPORTED ON A CORRESPONDING MULTI-LAYERED STRUCTURAL SUPPORT SYSTEM. STEEL PIPE SUB-STRUCTURE BOLTED TO CURVED WOOD STRUCTURE IS SUPPORTING THREE LAYERS OF DIFFERENT SUN FILTERING SHADES, PROVIDING SOFT AND CONTROLLED LIGHT, UV PROTECTION, HEAT AND LIGHT ABSORPTION:
1ST LAYER: OPERABLE DOUBLE-GLAZED WINDOWS WITH UVA PROTECTION FILM.

2ND LAYER: METAL FABRIC (WIRE MESH) WITH HIGH DEGREE OF TRANSPARENCY WITH GLARE AND LIGHT REDUCING DENSITY.

3RD LAYER: SQUARE SECTION WOOD SLATES PROVIDING ADDITIONAL SHADE OVER FACADE AREAS WITH HIGHER EXPOSURE TO THE SUN.

THE ARCHITECTURAL STATEMENT IS ONE OF LIGHTNESS AND OPENNESS, A HIGH-TECH ADDITION TO A CONVENTIONAL BUILDING.
