YAAR RESIDENCE AND STUDIO ’99

THE HOUSE AND TAI-CHI STUDIO WAS COMMISSIONED BY A FAMILY IN ISRAEL WITH A UNIQUE CHARACTER: THE DESIRE TO LIVE OUTDOORS AS MUCH AS INDOORS. THE ARCHITECTURAL APPROACH TO THAT UNUSUAL REQUEST IS ONE OF DUALITY: EVERYTHING YOU DO INSIDE, YOU CAN ALSO DO OUTSIDE.
AN OPEN SPACE IS ATTACHED TO EACH AND EVERY INDOOR SPACE AND PROVIDES AN EXTENSION OF THE INDOOR PROGRAM INTO THE OUTDOORS:

  • THE INDOOR TAI-CHI STUDIO EXTEND INTO AN OPEN SPACE WOOD DECK, ALLOWING FOR SESSIONS AT THE OPEN.
  • THE KITCHEN COUNTER EXTENDS OUTSIDE INTO THE ATTACHED OUTDOOR DECK AND OFFERS OUTDOOR SEATING AND COOKING.
  • THE LIVING ROOM STRETCHES OUT TO A LARGE DECK, EXPOSED TO THE OPEN SKY.
  • THE BATHROOM’S CHASE WALL BREAK THROUGH THE EXTERIOR WALL AND OFFERS AN OUTDOOR SHOWER AND BATH.
  • MASTER BEDROOM’S DOUBLE BED IS MIRRORED TO AN OUTDOOR SPACE, GIVING THE PARENTS THE POSSIBILITY OF SLEEPING UNDER THE STARS.

THE ROOFS ON ALL THE STRUCTURES ARE LIGHT ZINC AND STEEL, ALLOWING EASY DRAINAGE, PROTECTING THE SPACES FROM THE HARSH EASTERN SUN AND PROVIDING CROSS VENTILATION.
